A study by the University of Bath claims those with acne fail to participate in sport out of shyness - or 'dermatological social anxiety'. The study, published in the Journal of Health Psychology, involved 50 young to middle-aged adults recruited from a national acne support group. Acne sufferers who saw their skin problems as a negative thing, also experienced lower self-esteem and a poorer quality of life, the study found. The researchers claim 'dermatological social anxiety' is often overlooked in studies on motivation for sport and exercise in favour of physical inhibitions. read more
