The bleak roll call of the teenage dead so far this year includes Henry Bolombi, Faridon Alizada, Boduka Mudianga, Sunday Essiet, Tung Le, Michael Jones, Devoe Roach, Amro Elbadawi, Lyle Tulloch, Jimmy Mizen and Robert Knox. Ray Lewis, London’s deputy mayor for young people appointed recently by Boris Johnson, hosted a summit on knife crime yesterday and said that the Metropolitan Police would no longer go easy on those found in possession of a knife. Speaking this week to teenage boys across London, I found a fear of violent crime was as much a part of their lives as acne and the opposite sex. Ali Bernedji knew both Robert Knox, the Harry Potter actor who died last week, and Jimmy Mizen, the 16-year-old killed in a bakery earlier in the month. read more
