Acne News - Acne drug on trial in Edwardsville (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)

EDWARDSVILLE — A few years ago, Jason Peipert of Godfrey had a college soccer scholarship, was almost out of his teens and wanted to shed that last vestige of youth — embarrassing acne. The Madison County trial, which Circuit Judge David Hylla has set for October, will likely be watched around the country and could serve as a bellwether for hundreds of other suits. One key unanswered question is whether Hylla will allow Peipert’s attorneys to pursue punitive damages; a potentially large additional award if a jury finds wanton misconduct, gross negligence and fraud in Hoffman-La Roche’s actions. Peipert’s attorneys and others around the country say Hoffman-La Roche actively played down Accutane’s risk for inflammatory bowel disease, a catch-all term for a number of health problems, including ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. read more

Lawsuit ends over boy-pilot’s acne drug (AP via Yahoo! News)- Acne News

District Judge James Moody dismissed the lawsuit Tuesday at the request of lawyers for Julia Bishop and Karen Johnson, the mother and grandmother of Charles Bishop. Accutane , contended Charles was a troubled young man and his use of Accutane was not to blame for his suicide. Court papers filed by the company say the boy’s parents tried to carry out a suicide pact before he was born, and his mother had numerous bouts of depression. Food and Drug Administration said it has 234 reports of suicide among Accutane users worldwide from 1982 to December 2003. read more
